Why an age calculator to answer how old am I?

When I was a young boy I always knew my exact age. As aunts, uncles, and friends asked, I would immediately say: "I am three years old!", or "I am eight!". So I found it strange that my grandma would respond to the question how old she was, with "I was born in 1928"; I kept wondering "well how old is she then?".

But as the years go by, I noticed people tend to forget their exact age, and start refering to their date of birth. As we grow older, we tend to forget our exact age. Why is that? Perhaps because we don't celebrate our age as much as we did when we were kids. As a kid, we would celebrate our birthday with a big party. But as we grow older, birthdays become less of a big deal, and we tend to forget our exact age.

The fact is sometimes we need to calculate our age, because we need it on forms, applications, or to just answer your grandchildren's curiosity.

I kept having to Google my age, but couldn't find a quick age checker. With this simple website I try to make it as easy as possible to calculate your exact age and have a quick age checker.

Date of birth calculator (or "find my birthday")

Another fact that somehow impacts my perception of myself and the world is on what day of the week I was born. Mine was a Thursday, and I always felt a certain connection to that day since knowing it.

So I added the date of birth calculator as well, so you can find out on what day of the week you were born. Finally you can find and check your birthday. Some people also call this a "dob checker".

How do you calculate your age?

The calculation of your exact age is not as straightforward as it might seem. We cover:

  • Approach to the calculation
  • Different month lengths
  • Time zones
  • Leap years

Approach to the calculation

When you select your birth day (with the year, month and day) we carefully count through each completed year: that gives us the total number of years. Following that, we do the same with the total number of completed months, and then lastly the total number of completed days.

Different month lengths

Some months have different lengths: February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year, while other months have 30 or 31 days. When we count the number of completed months and days, we take this into account.

Time zones

Time zones can affect your exact age, particularly if you are born just before or after midnight. Daylight savings can also play role. We approach this by using your local timezone to calculate the date. We chose this approach because we believe most people wil likely calculate their age from the time zone where they were born.

Leap years

Leap years are interesting and provide another challenge. Every four years there is an additional day added to February: February 29th. Except century years not divisible by 400! So interestlingly, 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was.

We take these cases into account in our calculations. Someone who is born on February 29th, will have their age calculcated correctly. Their birth day in non-leap years, will be moved to February 28th- a very common approach.
